Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, also known as BJJ, is a self-defense-based martial art developed to aid a smaller, weaker individual in defending him or herself against a bigger, stronger, faster aggressor.  BJJ utilizes a system of joint locks and chokes to subdue an opponent through the proper use of leverage and technique. The classes are founded on an encouraging, friendly atmosphere.  Our instructors care about each member’s safety, and fitness progress. Our team of instructors and staff prides itself on an easy-to-follow curriculum that allows each student to take ownership of their progress.

Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Ages 9-14

Youth Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a 1-hour class designed for boys and girls between the ages of 9 to 14 years old.  Youth BJJ is broken up into two age groups. Little Tigers BJJ is for ages 5-9 and is taught by Kurtis Rangel. Jr. Tigers BJJ is for ages 10-14 and is taught by Josh Woodard. Students in this course will learn the fundamental self-defense techniques of BJJ.

Our instructors take pride in our strategic coaching methods that create a safe learning environment, which in turn, maximizes the learning process in the classroom. Students will not only learn practical self-defense techniques but also experience an increase in confidence, humility, and self-discipline. The objective is to develop students in both character and skill. This course welcomes students of all fitness levels.

Class Structure

The instructor begins each class with an encouraging thought of the day followed by a few minutes of mindfulness practice. Students are then taught the lesson for the day followed by a preview of the next class lesson. The lesson plan follows a systematic rotating curriculum. Students repeat their lessons until they are proficient with the techniques and ready for belt promotion.

Ages 13+

Teen & Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a 1-hour class designed for students ages 13+. The class starts with warmups designed to prepare you for class and to practice the most used techniques of BJJ self-defense. Next, we review previously learned techniques through small group drilling. Finally, we teach the “technique of the day”, followed by free sparring (rolling) for those who would like to participate.

FAQs

Do I need to be strong, flexible, and in good shape for BJJ?

No. You do not need to be strong, flexible, or in particularly good shape to start Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. By practicing Jiu-jitsu, you will most certainly improve your strength, flexibility, and conditioning (plus balance, coordination, and more), but you do not need to have those traits to begin with. Disclaimer: Doctors’ recommend anyone who starts any strenuous activity, including Brazilian Jiu-jitsu; receive a physical examination to ensure they can safely participate in the program’s activities.

What do I wear for practice or to train BJJ?

Students are required to wear a gi (sometimes called a kimono) during training. However, if you are in your free trial classes, you can wear any comfortable sweatpants or shorts, and a t-shirt.

Is BJJ safe?

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a very safe sport.  Here at Tiger Martial Arts Fitness Academy our friendly mat etiquette, cleanliness, curriculum design, practice process, and instruction methods all ensure safety is first.

Is BJJ good exercise?

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is one of the best workouts you can get, and it provides far better results than a typical aerobic workout. It is also much more fun and interactive than most exercise programs, so you end up working out more and harder. Many people practice it primarily for the health/exercise benefits, which increase muscle tone and reduce body fat while improving your balance, coordination, cardio vascular capacity, and muscular endurance.

Who can/should do BJJ?

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is for everyone, regardless of sex or age. BJJ is designed for the smaller, weaker person to allow him or her to defend themselves against larger, stronger attackers. In that way, BJJ is perfectly suited for everyone.
